Our Intergroup

What is an Intergroup?

Intergroups or Central Offices are created to provide a variety of services which are not practical for an individual OA group to provide. Some Intergroups serve the entire state, while some serve only one district. This Intergroup serves the Florida Treasure Coast and Palm Beach County. Our Intergroup, like OA as a whole, is structured as an inverted pyramid. The group is served by an elected Intergroup Representative. These Reps collectively form a large bunch, each voicing their group’s conscience. The Reps guide the elected Board Officers (Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary) who have a more hands-on role in the operation of Intergroup. The Board oversees several Standing Committees. From the top down, it’s the group conscience at each level making decisions.

Intergroup Purpose

The purpose of Palm Beach County Intergroup is to promote the unity within the Intergroup, to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas, to be aware of and serve the needs of member Groups and to carry the message of Overeaters Anonymous to the compulsive overeater who still suffers, by:

Furthering the OA program in accordance with the Twelve Steps, Twelve Traditions, and Twelve Concepts of OA.

Maintaining a Communication Center for the Intergroup.

Providing a format for selection of Board Officer nominees.

Providing unity of Groups and organization of Groups within the Intergroup.

Conducting various recovery events that help further the aims of the Intergroup and member Groups.

What Does an Intergroup Do?

The Intergroup body decides what will and will not be done concerning OA in Palm Beach County. This is done at a monthly meeting of the Intergroup Representatives, where motions are voted on and other business is discussed. An Intergroup Representative is a person who is elected by their group, who has at least six months of abstinence and is working an active program. Their responsibility will be to attend the monthly Intergroup meeting, vote on issues at the meeting, give a detailed report to their group and take motions back to their group that require group consensus. It is good practice to elect an Alternate Representative as well. This person can fill in when the Intergroup Representative is not available to attend the monthly meeting

Intergroup Mission Statement

To support individuals in need of recovery from compulsive eating (e.g.: overeating, bulimia, anorexia) through empowering all meetings within the Intergroup.
